YOUTH VOLLEYBALL RULES AND REGULATIONS The current issue of the National Federation of High Schools Rule Book will prevail other than the exceptions listed in this publication. USA Volleyball has a rulebook updated annually called Domestic Competition Regulations, which follow the rules of the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB). This rulebook has a section dedicated to youth play for 3-11 year old athletes, who should be playing in teams of two or four. Teams Teams can be made of two, three, or four players per side.
7. Other Rules a. A distinct hit must be made. No holding, throwing or catching the ball is allowed. b. The ball may be hit three times by one team in a volley. Any one player cannot hit the ball twice in succession. c. Touching an opponent under the net is not allowed. d. Players may never touch the net while the ball is in play. e.
Current Youth Volleyball Rules and Regulations. Substitutions must be made in the middle back position only. Each player entering the court must fully rotate through the game rotation and be allowed to serve if game rotation proceeds to that extent. Substitutions are unlimited and will not be tracked by an official.
1- In youth play, participants must be at least 7 years old by August 31 of the current year. Participants cannot turn 18 prior to September 1 of current year. 2- U8 cannot turn 9 before September 1 of current year. U10 cannot turn 11 before September 1 of current year. U13 cannot turn 14 before September 1 of current year.
In general, teams must have at least 6 players to start the match, and at least 6 eligible players (substitution players, or “subs”) to play the match. There are 6 players on court for each team during the match. In FIVB rules, a team may have up to 14 players in total.
